What is Somazina (citicoline) used for?

  • It is used to improve cognitive and neurological disorders associated with acute and sub-acute stroke.
  • It is used to improve cognitive and neurological disorders associated with traumatic brain injuries.
  • It is used to improve to improve the symptoms of cerebral like decline in memory and thinking skills that occurs normally with age.
  • It may be given to you for other reasons. Talk with the doctor.

Important notes before taking Somazina (citicoline):

  • Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have an allergy to citicoline or any other part of this drug. 
  • Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to any drugs like this one, any other drugs, foods, or other substances. Tell your doctor about the allergy and what signs you had, like rash; hives; itching; shortness of breath; wheezing; cough; swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; or any other signs.
  • If you suffer from hypertonia of the parasympathetic nervous system which is a serious state with hypotension, perspiration, tachycardia and fainting.
  • If you are allergic to aspirin, as it can cause asthma.
  • Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all of your drugs (prescription or OTC, natural products, vitamins) and health problems. You must check to make sure that it is safe for you to take this drug with all of your drugs and health problems. Do not start, stop, or change the dose of any drug without checking with your doctor.

Important notes while taking Somazina (citicoline):

Tell all of your health care providers that you take this drug. This includes your doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and dentists.

Somazina (citicoline), should not be used if you are pregnant or breast-feeding, or think you may be pregnant, unless your doctor finds it necessary.

Somazina (citicoline) side effects:

Side effects with this medicine are very rare (less than 1 of 10,000 patients). Headache, vertigo, nausea, occasional diarrhea, redness of the face, limb swelling and changes in blood pressure may appear. If you experience some of these or other symptoms please tell your doctor. 

If any of the side effects gets serious, or if you notice any side effects not listed in this leaflet, please tell your doctor or pharmacist.

What do I do if I miss a dose?

Take your dose as soon as you remember. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.  

How do I store and/or throw out this drug?

  • Keep Somazina (citicoline) out of the reach and sight of children.
  • Do not use Somazina (citicoline) after the expiry date stated on the package.
  • Store in the original container.
  • Throw away unused or expired drugs. Do not flush down a toilet or pour down a drain unless you are told to do so. Check with your pharmacist if you have questions about the best way to throw out drugs.
