Product Description:
Ursyl is the brand name of drug called ursodeoxycholic acid and manufactured by Actoverco Pharmaceuticals. Ursyl (Ursodeoxycholic acid) is a naturally occurring substance (bile acid) normally present in small amounts in the bile. This compound works by lowering the amount of cholesterol in bile and gallstones.

What is Ursyl (Ursodeoxycholic acid) used for?
- It is used to treat or prevent gallstones;
- It is used to treat liver disease associated with cystic fibrosis in children aged 6 to 18 years;
- It is used to treat a type of liver disease caused by bile duct problems in the liver (biliary cirrhosis).
Important notes before taking Ursyl (Ursodeoxycholic acid):
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to this drug; any part of this drug; or any other drugs, foods, or substances.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have a biliary tract block, bile duct inflammation, abnormal active ulcer in the biliary and gastrointestinal tracts, pancreatic inflammation, or swelling of the gallbladder (cholecystitis).
- Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all of your drugs (prescription or OTC, natural products, vitamins) and health problems. You must check to make sure that it is safe for you to take this drug with all of your drugs and health problems. Do not start, stop, or change the dose of any drug without checking with your doctor.
Important notes while taking Ursyl (Ursodeoxycholic acid):
- Tell all of your health care providers that you take this drug. This includes your doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and dentists.
- Have blood work checked as you have been told by the doctor. Talk with the doctor.
- This drug takes months to dissolve gallstones. Talk with the doctor if you have questions about this information.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan on getting pregnant, or are breast-feeding.
Ursyl (Ursodeoxycholic acid) side effects:
Even though it may be rare, some people may have very bad and sometimes deadly side effects when taking a drug. Tell your doctor or get medical help right away if you have any of the following signs or symptoms that may be related to a very bad side effect:
- Signs of an allergic reaction, like rash; hives; itching; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin with or without fever; wheezing; tightness in the chest or throat; trouble breathing, swallowing, or talking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat
- Signs of a urinary tract infection (UTI) like blood in the urine, burning or pain when passing urine, feeling the need to pass urine often or right away, fever, lower stomach pain, or pelvic pain
- Swelling of belly
- Stomach cramps
- Loss of appetite
- Rarely, stones in the stomach or bowel have happened with this drug. Sometimes this has needed surgery. These patients also had other risk factors like crohn’s disease or a history of bowel surgery. Tell your doctor right away if you have signs of bowel block like severe constipation, pain, or bloating
Some people have had lung problems with this drug. Sometimes, this has been deadly. Call your doctor right away if you have signs of lung problems like shortness of breath or other trouble breathing, cough that is new or worse, or fever.
All drugs may cause side effects. However, many people have no side effects or only have minor side effects. Call your doctor or get medical help if any of these side effects or any other side effects bother you or do not go away:
- Dizziness or headache
- Back pain
- Constipation, diarrhea, stomach pain, upset stomach, or throwing up
- Gas
- Muscle or joint pain
- Signs of a common cold
- Hair loss
These are not all of the side effects that may occur. If you have questions about side effects, call your doctor. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects.
What do I do if I miss a dose?
Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is less than 2 hours until your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time.
Do not take two doses at the same time or extra doses.
How do I store and/or throw out this drug?
- Store at room temperature(30°C).
- Protect from light and moisture.
Keep all drugs in a safe place. Keep all drugs out of the reach of children.
